D A Y S I X ! Welcome to day 6 of 7 in which we a D A Y S I X !
Welcome to day 6 of 7 in which we are taking an in depth look at how our tutor Jenny spent her time restoring a Victorian chaise longue during the long months of lockdowns - each day, along with a few pics, she’ll explain what she did, the upholstery processes and techniques. Finally on day 7 we’ll see the finished piece!

⠀
LINING THE BASE, CLOSING THE BACK AND PIPING
The base was covered with tarpaulin, Woolguard and top fabric and tacked into the back edges with colour matched gimp pins for neatness.
⠀
In order to close up the back, I first attached an edge of single piping all the way around it. Rather than use metal back tacking strip to insert the back panel I opted to hand sew all the way around the top and sides for the neatest finish using slip stitch and a curved needle.
⠀
It can take a lot of fabric to make piping because it’s best to cut the fabric on the bias (diagonally) to give maximum stretch around corners. Lengths should be joined together at an angle to distribute the bump of the joining seam. Rather than replace the old braiding like for like, I made several metres of double piping to edge the chaise longue frame and cover the raw edges of the top fabric.

WOOLGUARD AND TOP FABRIC
As there was scope for just a bit more height and the owners were looking for soft and comfy, I added another soft layer to the top of the seat cushion, this time cotton, before stitching on a full cover of Woolguard. Woolguard is 100% wool, inherently fire retardant and a natural alternative to polyester wadding. It also allows you to use non FR top fabrics as long as they are at least 75% natural fibres. The whole of the chair back and arm was also covered in Woolguard.
⠀
With all the foundation work in place, it was time to attach the top fabric. Chosen by the owners, the leafy pattern made it easy to match up sections and the biggest challenge was upholstering through the back corner with the back permanently fixed in place. Luckily there was a little more give in this fabric than the calico, which meant the relief cuts inside the curves of the back could be smaller. I cut as much of the top fabric out of the folds as possible to minimise bumps on the back.
⠀
Back tacking strip was used to create a cascade of fabric sections in clean crisp lines all the way from the top to the bottom of the base edge.

D A Y F O U R ! While we wait for time to tick by D A Y F O U R !
While we wait for time to tick by until we open the workshop in May, for 7 days we are taking an in depth look at how our tutor Jenny spent her time restoring a Victorian chaise longue during the long months of lockdowns - each day, along with a few pics, she’ll explain what she did, the upholstery processes and techniques. Today is day 4 of 7 and on day 7 we’ll see the finished piece!
⠀
💫🧵🌟🧵💫
⠀
THE SEAT CUSHION
The seat cushion was my biggest challenge - I had never made one from scratch with hair before but happily, I found a very old upholstery book that gave some guidance. I took the old mattress apart carefully, noting the structure and stitching. The hair here was a lot coarser and far dustier! I made the new cushion case from a linen and cotton mix scrim.
⠀
The first stuffing took two attempts – the first involving far too much hair and a lot of wrestling with an over-plump cushion! The second was far better. Once the height was tied down and the edges stitched to keep the shape, I added a second layer of hair top and bottom and around the edges to create a smooth and even shape. The edge hair was held in place with a scrim border. To soften the cushion top, I next added a layer of recycled grey wool felt and then persuaded the whole construction into a calico cotton case.

⠀
SECOND STUFFING AND CALICO
A second stuffing of hair was added to both the back and arm, with more stitching to consolidate the shape of the arm. I added a layer of recycled grey wool felt on top of the hair for softness and feathered the edges of the felt up to the frame edge for a smooth shape.
⠀
The calico cotton layer was the next to be attached – first with temporary tacking to allow for adjustment of the tension, folds and cuts and then with staples. The tight curve at the end of the back required deep relief cuts to get a smooth shape.
⠀
The back was originally held in place with big bolts to be removable but at some point one of these was lost, along with some of the fixings holding the back to the arm so it had been permanently glued into position to strengthen it. This meant that I had to feed the edges of the calico through the tiny gap between them using thread and a long needle!

BUILDING THE FOUNDATIONS
New webbing was tacked on – jute for the back and black & white for the base and arm - and hessian was then attached over the top ready to support the first stuffing of hair.
⠀
To make sure that the layers of hair were even, I divided the arm and back surfaces into equal sections and the hair into handfuls of equal weight – one handful for each section. The hair was held in place with large bridle stitches, regulated to knit the handfuls together and form an even pad and then covered with a layer of hessian scrim.
⠀
I began to form the shape of the arm, first with a tapered hair-stuffed edge roll around the front, then with a layer of hair behind it. Once this first stuffing was covered with hessian and stitched in place I used blind and top stitches to strengthen the front edge of the shape.

STRIPPING BACK THE OLD UPHOLSTERY
This chaise longue was a family heirloom in need of total restoration. A beautifully crafted high-end piece of furniture with many of the original materials and work still in place, it had become tired and uncomfortable after years of use and recovering.
⠀
The first stage was to remove all of the old upholstery, the frayed and disintegrated materials, saggy webbing and compressed hair filling - dust mask and gloves essential! All of the hair was washed, rinsed, teased apart and sun dried ready for re-use. We don’t use new animal hair in the Makershed so this would be a great opportunity to work with this material.
⠀
Under the current upholstery were scraps of previous top fabrics, including a vibrant coloured carpet fabric that would have been fashionable in the Victorian era. I hid the fabric scraps inside the back when I re-sealed it so that the next upholsterer would be able to see the history.

H A N D T O O L S ! One of our favourite tradition H A N D T O O L S !
One of our favourite traditional woodworking tools has to be the No.44 Record plough plane. Why?! Well, it could be that it's quicker and easier to set up than a modern electric router? Or that it easily creates accurate ploughed grooves? Or that it just looks so darn sexy?! Or that it creates really cute curly wurly shavings? Or that it is SO satisfying to use? Er yep, it’s all of those things and more.
⠀
These planes were manufactured by Record from 1934 to 1970, they were fitted with an adjustable depth gauge, double arm adjustable bridged fences and two pairs of fence arms (long and short), and will cut grooves 5/8″ deep up to 5″ from edge. Screw adjustment is fitted to the cutter which enables it to be fed into the work with an accurate and easy control.
⠀
If you’d like to learn how to use a plough plane and the essentials of woodwork joinery using traditional methods and tools. B O O K C A S E ! Back in the Summer of 2019 our l B O O K C A S E !
Back in the Summer of 2019 our lovely student Chrissy made a bookcase for her Daughter’s bedroom during our Level 3 Projects Classes. Her focus here was to hand chisel the 8 stopped housings joints to hold the shelves in place and the results looked fantastic.
⠀
After completing levels 1 & 2 of our Woodwork for Beginners course, our students can move on to level 3 where we help with project design, timber sourcing, joinery plans and then give students technical guidance as they complete their own bespoke project. And they can make what ever they like…. as long as it fits through our door!
⠀
As soon as we reopen those workshop doors, existing Woodwork for Beginners Level 2 students will be given the option to keep their class place and continue on to do the Woodwork Joinery Level 3 course as soon as a place becomes available. Please visit our website for more information.

During our Level 1 - The Stool course, students can learn the basics of traditional upholstery techniques by upholstering a pine stool, before moving to Level 2 - The Chair and upholstering a dining style chair using a mix of traditional and modern upholstery techniques. In Level 3 students choose their own project and we guide them through the process of planning, stripping, repair and re-upholstery.
⠀
Our workshop ready to go and divided into separate work areas with a ‘safe space’ for working that is 2m from other work areas and 2m from communal walkways. When we reopen all of our classes will have a student:tutor ratio of 6:1. Most are mixed level and some are mixed discipline, which means you will likely be in a group of people all doing different projects.
⠀
Each student work area has its own set of tools and equipment so that sharing is minimised as much as possible along with cleaning and sanitising equipment for each student to use during each class. Tuition is given on an individual basis at each student’s bench to ensure a fully COVID-secure working and learning environment.

A N G L E S ! A sliding bevel is a fantastic adjus A N G L E S !
A sliding bevel is a fantastic adjustable woodworking tool which is used to set, duplicate and transfer angles. Made up of 3 parts - the stock, usually made of wood is joined to a metal blade by a wing nut or thumb screw. When the blade is set back in the stock it’s the perfect angle for our students to mark out dovetails.
⠀
Way back since the ancient Egyptians cut dovetails, cutting a joint that fits well is the most critical part to the joint standing the test of time. You don’t want your angle so steep that the tails break during gluing up or too straight that you lose the mechanical advantage dovetails offer. When teaching which angle to use, our recommendation is always a ratio of 1:8 for hardwoods and 1:6 for softwoods.
⠀
Our students learn how to hand make a small cabinet drawer using through dovetails but there are many other types - the half-blind, the secret mitred, full blind or the secret double-lapped, all of which make up one of the most beautifully aesthetic carpentry joints. If you’d like to learn how to chisel a dovetail joint using only traditional hand tools, visit our website for more information.

U P H O L S T E R Y ! During our Eco Upholstery Le U P H O L S T E R Y !
During our Eco Upholstery Level 3 – Re-upholstery Projects classes, you can choose your project and we’ll help guide you through the process of planning, stripping, repair and re-upholstery using recycled and environmentally friendly materials. Tuition is given on an individual basis at each student’s bench to ensure a fully COVID-secure working and learning environment.
⠀
Re-upholstery projects vary a lot in the time in takes to complete them. Having completed the level 1 and 2 courses with us, you will be aware that upholstery by hand requires time and patience and the number of classes you require will depend on your project and work speed. Most classes are mixed level, which means you will likely be in a group of people all doing different projects.
⠀
In 2021 Tuesday evening classes 6.20pm -8.35pm and Friday daytime classes 10.00am – 3.00pm at The Makershed will mean were running Eco Upholstery classes. We operate individual waiting lists for places in these classes. Please email hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk to be added to one or more waiting lists or visit our website for further information.

⠀
Split into three modules, each taking approximately 18 teaching hours to complete. You start with module 2A – The Case - and learn about through housings and through wedged mortice & tenons. Then moving on to module 2B – The Drawer - you’ll learn to create dovetails, corner rebates and ploughed grooves. Finishing off with module 2C – The Door - where you’ll learn the strong haunched stopped mortice & tenon and ploughed groove joints.
⠀
When we reopen all of our classes will have a student:tutor ratio of 6:1. T O O L B O X E S! As we’re not getting back int T O O L B O X E S!
As we’re not getting back into the workshop until at least March, we’re going to continue our look back through our photo archive and reminisce. All the COVID-19 sadness has almost made us forget the joyful days of having a class full of happy students with no masks and no social distancing required. Thus we shall indulge ourselves with enjoyable memories like this.
⠀
This one is from November 2019 when this lovely bunch finished their ‘2 weekends’ Woodwork for Beginners course. They had a great time learning how to to mark out a joint, saw straight and square, chisel a rebate and use a variety of planes including block, plough and smoothing types.
⠀
We’re looking forward to adding loads more Makershed toolboxes to the world again in the future and we can’t wait to welcome ALL of our students back on the other side of Lockdown 3.0. In the meantime for all enquires regarding classes and rescheduling course dates please email us via hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk and we will reply as soon as possible.

P L A N E S ! Our tutor Jenny is keeping busy duri P L A N E S !
Our tutor Jenny is keeping busy during lockdown 3.0 by making some oak shelving from reclaimed floor boards. To prepare the timber she’s using a Quangsheng No. 62 low angle jack plane for the squaring the end grain, an Axminster Rider standard angle block plane for bevelling the edges, a Stanley Bailey smoothing plane for the long grain on the surfaces and a card scraper for tackling the knotty bits.
⠀
We absolutely love that there is a tool for every kind of woodworking job you can think of, so if you’d like to learn how to plane timber flat and square using planes like these, and be guided through using many other different types of traditional woodworking hand tools, then you can sign up for our beginners woodworking courses.
⠀
Our workshop doors might be closed, but waiting lists for all courses are still open so visit our website to have a look at what’s on offer and email us at hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk to register your interest.

The Makershed will be re-opening on Monday the 17th May.

It’s looks like we will be reopening our workshop on the 17th May, so our regular weekly daytime and evening classes will be restarting from that week for existing students. We’ll be putting our new 2021 timetable up on the website as soon as possible and getting in touch with everyone on our waiting lists to offer new weekend course start dates.

As before Lockdown 3.0 our workshop will be COVID-19 secure and ready to reopen safely to students in May, with class capacity set to 6 students to enable physical distancing and each student will have a workstation kitted out with individual tools and PPE. As before we will continue to look after everyone’s health and aim to stop the spread of Covid-19 further.

Waiting lists for all courses are still open so have a look at what’s on offer and email us to register your interest for our re-opening. In the meantime lets all keep our fingers crossed about what the scientists says and we’ll be back in the Makershed in MAY!!
