B A G S !
Would you like to make your own bespoke bag? On our Beginner’s Bag Making course you could make a tote bag, a bucket bag, a roll-top bag or a handlebar bag for your bike. You can make your new bag either from new fabric (we can advise you what and how much to buy) or upcycled textiles or garments like your old jeans, coat or curtains.

Our tutor Debs will walk you through all the steps involved in making your bag and build your sewing confidence, you’ll learn how to set up and use a sewing machine, about different type of stitches, threads & fabrics. She’ll teach you how to sew straight seams and different ways to finish them, how to cut and pin fabric using a simple pattern, how to add eyelets/webbing and straps and adding a lining and pockets!

Woooo hooooo to Tess who despite a pandemic and 3 national lockdowns getting in the way, has finished her cabinet on our Level 2 Beginners woodworking course and it looks awesome. She is now going on to our Level 3 Project classes and is currently in the design/planning stage to make an amazing (top secret) gift for a relative so we can’t give the game away just yet!

Our Level 2 courses is split into three modules, the case, the drawer and the door, each module takes approximately 18 teaching hours to complete but the pace at which a student works is set by them. This course is suitable for students who have completed our Level 1 woodworking course.

Would you like to make your own buffet dress? Chic, comfy and stylish, the buffet dress is a flowing, tiered loose-fit dress that became a lockdown hit! Suitable for a confident beginner this sewing course will give you a good understanding of garment construction. You will make your own buffet dress using the Tilly and the Buttons Indigo Smock dress pattern.

You will learn how to use a pattern, how to add pockets and sleeves to a dress, how to apply facings, and how to add gathers, ruffles and bust darts. Our Woodwork for Beginners courses are split into 2 Levels over which you’ll learn a variety of traditional joinery techniques. In Level 1 you’ll make a softwood tool box and we’ll teach you how to mark out a joint, saw straight and square, chisel a rebate flat and use a variety of planes including block, plough and smoothing types effectively.

Suitable for those with no previous woodwork experience or those wanting to improve their skills. In completing this course not only will you have a tool box to take home but also a strong foundation of woodwork skills that will enable you to carry out your own basic woodworking projects or to progress on to our Woodwork for Beginners Level 2 classes.

With COVID case numbers growing incredibly fast in Bristol and in order to safeguard students and tutors, from today we’re asking everyone to continue wearing face coverings whilst moving around the workshop and while receiving 1:1 tuition at student benches.

To ensure a fully COVID-secure working and learning environment, there will be no immediate changes to the COVID security measures in place at The Makershed in response to the relaxation of government guidelines that have changed today.

Huge congratulations to Alison who designed and made this fabulous shelving unit for her daughters lego creations on our last Pallet Wood Weekend Workshop. Our workshops are for beginners who wish to learn how to easily dismantle a pallet into useable timber and then with the help of our tutor Luke plan a specific design, draw plans, make cutting lists and learn how to use hand tools and build your project using traditional joinery techniques.

Our Pallet Wood Weekend Workshop is now fully booked for August BUT don’t worry there are 2 spaces left for 2nd & 3rd October weekend or you can book the 23rd & 24th of October or 27th & 28th of November. All materials are included, the pallet wood, plywood backing and wooden dowel if your project needs it. You can bring any specific accessories that you would like to use with your project, such as hooks, hinges or handles.

Ever wanted to make your own unique prints with handmade rubber stamps? Our Lino_printing for Beginners course will teach you to make your own hand-made project and lino-block to take home and use again and again!

Our tutor Ruth will teach you about the tools and materials for lino-printing and rubber stamp making; you’ll learn how to safely use lino-cutting tools, about engraving techniques, printing inks and you can choose from a selection of fun, simple applications, such as: t-shirt or tote-bag printing or hand-printing your own cards or artworks.

How fabulous do these woven coasters look?! Did you know you can book now for a weekend weaving & tapestry course on Sat 21st & Sun 22nd August? Our single weekend courses will teach you how to use a tapestry loom to create your own set of 2 - 4 coasters, create patterns as well as how to start and finish your weaving.

Our tutor Libby will teach you how to thread up a loom, weave your project and how to finish your handwoven creations so that they can be used long into the future. The course will cover the fundamentals of tapestry weaving, as well as some more advanced techniques that will enable you to leave feeling confident to keep weaving beyond the weekend.

Included will be step-by-step instructions on how to warp a loom, ways to weave with good technique, how to pick yarn for your project, how to interlock colours and create shapes as well as finishes to make your designs look beautiful. Our wood carving classes start NEXT WEEK with Alistair @carvings_with_stories offering you the opportunity to learn a wide variety of wood carving techniques, from relief carving to sculpture. You’ll start with a relief carving to learn some basic carving techniques and then choose a project that interests you, either relief, or in the round.

Be guided through all the stages of making it from design work to carving and finishing. Come and gain a comprehensive introduction to wood carving skills and the knowledge about buying and maintaining your own tools to set yourself up to carve at home or, stay for longer and develop your skills at your own pace.

F I N I S H I N G !
Last weekend saw our first wood finishing course with our tutor Harry. He took the students through the many stages of applying finishes to wood and taught them about different types of finishes and stains, what they are, how to apply them and in what situation they might want to use them.

They learnt about how to strip, the repair-ability and longevity of old coatings, correct surface preparation including grain filling and they were given guidance on choosing a suitable finish and how the properties of finish ingredients affect application and final characteristics.
⠀
They practiced lots of techniques with a range of oil, wax, and varnish finishes on boards and experienced how to make their own stain and hard wax finish. As well as learning about lightfastness and UV degradation of surface coatings and how to store and look their finishes.
⠀

Would you like to make your own bespoke bag? On our Beginner’s Bag Making course you could make a tote bag, a bucket bag, a roll-top bag or a handlebar bag for your bike. You can make your new bag either from new fabric (we can advise you what and how much to buy) or upcycled textiles or garments like your old jeans, coat or curtains.

Our tutor Debs will walk you through all the steps involved in making your bag and build your sewing confidence, you’ll learn how to set up and use a sewing machine, about different type of stitches, threads & fabrics. She’ll teach you how to sew straight seams and different ways to finish them, how to cut and pin fabric using a simple pattern, how to add eyelets/webbing and straps and adding a lining and pockets!

We love this so much we had to #Repost this amazing sculpture from Alistair our carving tutor @carvings_with_stories 'Albatross' was commissioned by Triodos Bank UK as a leaving gift for Peter Blom, the Chief Executive Officer of the bank's international operations. The sculpture is about 60cm (2 feet) tall. It was carved from locally grown hornbeam, boxwood and oak as well as using pieces of reclaimed African blackwood for the eyes.

Our wood carving classes with Alistair here @themakershedbristol will offer you the opportunity to learn a wide variety of wood carving techniques. You’ll start with a relief carving to learn some basic carving techniques and then choose a project that interests you, either relief, or in the round. You’ll learn all the stages of making it from design work to carving and finishing.

You will gain a comprehensive introduction to wood carving skills and the knowledge about buying and maintaining your own tools to set yourself up to carve at home or, stay for longer and develop your skills at your own pace. Woo hoo!! Despite a pandemic and 3 lockdowns getting slightly in the way, our Woodwork for Beginners L2 student Alice has finally completed her softwood cabinet and it’s awesome!!

As most of you know L1 Woodwork here @themakershedbristol means making a fabulous toolbox using only traditional hand tools and techniques. Moving onto L2 means that our students like Alice progress their hand joinery skills and knowledge by making a cabinet (over 3 modules) with a drawer and shaker style door using rebate, housing, dovetail and mortice & tenon joints (through wedged and haunched stopped), ploughed grooves and dowel techniques.

We are now operating waiting lists for ‘weekday’ evening and daytime courses and L2 students can book the modules independently and they can be spaced to suit their budget and life commitments and there is no requirement to commit to all three. Please email hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk if you would like to be added to a list.

Don’t forget there is our new ‘2 weekends’ daytime L2 course option to make hardwood dovetailed shelves and students will learn make this using through housing and dovetail joints, building on their L1 skills, again applying themselves to more challenging joinery and working with beautiful ethically sourced Red Grandis hardwood.

Whatever beginners project you wish to make during one of our workshops, our tutor Luke will help you learn how to easily dismantle a reclaimed pallet into useable timber, create a design, draw plans, make cutting lists and teach you how to use hand tools to build projects using traditional joinery techniques.
