Nice one Miguel!! Another fabulous toolboxes made by hand on our Level 1 Woodwork for Beginners course. He can now move onto our ‘Weekday’ Level 2 daytime or evening courses where he can progress his hand joinery skills and knowledge by making a cabinet with a drawer and shaker style door over 3 modules using rebate, housing, dovetail and mortice & tenon joints, ploughed grooves and dowel techniques.

He like all of our students can can book the modules independently and they can be spaced to suit budget and life commitments and there is no requirement to commit to all three. Each module takes approximately 18 teaching hours to complete but the pace at which a student works is set by them.

Those students who have completed Level 1 can also take part in our ‘2 Weekends’ Level 2 course where they can make hardwood dovetailed shelves using through housing and dovetail joints working with beautiful ethically sourced Red Grandis hardwood and luckily some places are available to book now via our website. These are SO gorgeous! These placemats were woven by our student Erica on our Fabric Weaving for Beginners - Level 1 course. Next she will be coming back for our Level 2 course having learned the basics of using a rigid heddle loom it is now time to expand her weaving knowledge and learn to hand weave her own lambs wool scarf.

The next Level 1 course start dates are on Monday evenings starting on the 10th January or Tuesday Mornings starting on the 11th January. Our tutor Libby @e.ballondesign will teach you how to thread up a loom, weave your project and how to finish your handwoven creations so that they can be used long into the future and provide you with a fantastic foundation in weaving basics.

Lush! Alison has completed our Upholstered Furniture for Beginners - Level 1 course and made her own Storage Footstool. She has made a solid hardwood stool frame from sustainably sourced European steamed beech wood and then upholstered a lift-up deep-buttoned lid using her own fabulous fabric.

W O O D W O R K !
Woo hoo! Congratulations to the lovely Simon who has finished his cabinet case on our Woodworking for Beginners Level 2 course using traditional hand tools and techniques. In making this softwood cabinet he has learnt how to block plane end timber square, saw and chisel before using a router plane to smooth and flatten the surface of the through housings, marked out and cut wedged through mortise and tenon joints and the technique for how to dowel a back rail into position using fabulously handy little dowel points.

Simon has now moved on to module B to make a dovetail drawer, and will finished his cabinet with module C, a haunched tenon shaker style door. Each of our 3 modules, take approximately 18 teaching hours to complete but the pace at which a student works is set by them. Our Level 2 students can book the modules independently and they can be spaced to suit their budget and life commitments and there is no requirement to commit to all three.

If you’ve always wanted to make your own unique prints, our Lino-printing for Beginners course will teach you to make your own hand-made project and lino-block to take home and use again and again!

Our tutor Ruth @ruthdrawthings will teach you about the tools and materials for lino-printing and rubber stamp making; you’ll learn how to safely use lino-cutting tools, about engraving techniques, printing inks and you can choose from a selection of fun, simple applications, such as: t-shirt or tote-bag printing or hand-printing your own cards or artworks.

Whether you want to experiment with repeating pattern design or more complex, stand-alone block prints you’ll learn the difference between multiple blades for producing different marks and textures and how to produce consistent, crisp lino-prints.

Cultivate your inner alchemist with our workshop ‘The foundations of fabric dyeing with plants’ and explore the wonders of natural dyes - a delicate balance of science and artistry. We will be using historical and plant-based recipes, as well as delving into the environmental and social issues surrounding the use of dyes.

You’ll learn about traditional historical natural dye processes, some simple Japanese Shibori methods - the art of shaped-resist dyeing. We’ll teach you how to prepare your cloth for dyeing along with good sources of colours and their different properties.

Included in the course fee is tutoring, tool use and materials - there are no extra costs. If you would like to bring your own cotton fabric or clothes or other materials for your project that's absolutely fine - just bring them along to the first class so that the tutor can make sure they are suitable.

Our carving classes are in full flow on Tuesday evenings and we can’t wait to see this ‘houses’ design is carved into this piece of London Plane timber. Interestingly the timber was reclaimed from a tree which originally grew on the site of the new Southmead hospital here in Bristol which was sadly removed due to the building work.

If you’re wondering about the socks, they are Alistair’s high tech solution to damaged cutting edges and are put on G cramps to stop the carving tools being knocked into them and getting dinged. And yes, they are his old socks, which have been washed before this new use! 😃

At the end of each course we ask our students to let us know what they plan to keep in their ’TOOL’ boxes. It seems this lovely lot have other things than tools in mind…. Becci will be housing some plants, Freddie will be using his as a bathroom magazine holder, Nicola is giving hers away as a gift to a friend, Rhys will be using his as a doorstop (what!), Marcus will be storing his knitting, Danny will be housing his new plane (TOOL!!!) and Laurie will be keeping his photos in his!!!

If you’d like to make a tool (or whatever) box, we have TWO spaces available for our Level 1 ‘2 WEEKENDS’ course starting on the 4th of December. Suitable for those with no previous woodwork experience, learn how to make a tool box using traditional techniques and woodworking hand tools such as chisels, saws, marking gauges, squares, plough planes and ‘old reliable’ No.4 smoothing planes.

Proper job Pete! In making his bar height stool from European Redwood he has learnt about the different joints that can be made using power tools, which jointing methods to use where, and how to mark out, cut, fit and assemble the joints accurately and effectively.

Would you like to be guided through how to set up and safely operate a variety of portable power tools and woodworking machinery? You’ll be taught how to use the following tools and machinery: Biscuit Jointer; Dowel Jointer; Pocket Hole Jig; 1/2″ Plunge Router; 1/4″ Router Trimmer; Orbital Sander; Detail Sander; Combination Drill; Miller Dowel; Bandsaw; Table Saw; and Mitre/Chop Saw.

We love this! This furry bear was carved and printed during our Lino-Printing for Beginners evening courses where our fabulous tutor Ruth @ruthdrawsthings has been teaching our students about the tools and materials for lino-printing and rubber stamp making.

They’ve been learning how to safely use lino-cutting tools, about engraving techniques, printing inks. They’ll be going on to experiment with repeating pattern designs and more complex, stand-alone block prints and we’ll keep you updated with their progress.

Look at these great plaques! Our carving classes are in full swing and the students latest results of relief carving into oak boards has been amazing! If you fancy learning to carve, our next Tuesday evening course has places available to book starting next week - 16th November.

As a beginner, you’ll be guided through all the stages of relief carving by our tutor Alistair. He’ll guide you through the process of designing your own project, carving an oak board and applying a finish.
⠀
You’ll gain a comprehensive foundation of wood carving skills and the knowledge to buy and maintain your own tools. More experienced carvers can develop their skills in relief carving or in the round sculpture.
