Taught by our tutor Ali, we have spaces available for our MONDAY DAYTIME classes starting on the 20th of June or THURSDAY DAYTIME classes starting on the 30th of June both for 4 consecutive weeks.

Our Wood Finishing Course will teach you about different types of finishes and stains, how to apply them, and what situation you might want to use them. There will be an emphasis on learning about and using environmentally and animal-friendly finishes. Please note that shellac will accordingly not be used as part of this course.

Our tutor Harry will guide you through practising techniques with a range of finishes on boards supplied as well as learn about how to strip old coatings, surface preparation including grain filling, choosing a suitable finish, apply oils, waxes, paints, varnishes and other traditional finishes, and how you might approach their repair.

Our student Ampara has stripped an old art deco armchair and is starting to reupholster it, the new webbing so tight she can already sit on it! If you’d like to come along and re-upholster a piece of furniture, we will guide you through the process of planning, stripping and re-upholstery using environmentally friendly materials.

Our next re-upholstery morning or evening courses start on Tuesday the 14th of June. Most suitable for those who have some previous upholstery experience. Beginners are welcome, but please do get in touch before you book so that we can make sure that you have a project to work on that is suitable for your level. If required, we can also provide a small stool frame as an introductory project.

You can now book our next Tool Sharpening Weekend Workshop, which runs on the 2nd & 3rd of July. Our tutor Harry will teach you about caring for your tools to ensure long life and perform precise work. You’ll learn what ‘sharp’ really is, and the importance of sharpness when using woodworking tools.

He’ll teach you what to look for when purchasing old and new woodworking tools. You’ll learn about types of sharpening stone and abrasives, how to sharpen chisels, planes, scrapers, saws and restoring hand planes and how to set them so that they perform exactly how they should.

If you want to learn to sew or improve your skills, we’ve got plenty of sewing course options for you to choose from this Summer. Our tutor Debs will help you choose an appropriate project for your level of sewing, guide you through pattern and fabric choices and help you to make your project.

You can book now to join our garment making courses which run Tuesday evenings from the 20th of June or Thursday evenings from the 16th of June. You’ll learn how to follow a pattern, choose materials for your project, cut your pattern pieces, sew darts and fit a garment, make different types of seams and insert a variety of zips and buttonholes.

Our next weekend bag making course is available to book now on the 11th & 12th of June. You can choose to make your bag or bags either from new fabric or upcycled textiles or garments like jeans or curtains. Learn about the different types of stitches, threads & fabrics, how to sew straight seams and different ways to finish them and add straps and a lining and/or pockets.

If you want to take your first steps into jacket and coat making you can join our Jacket-Making Weekend Course on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th of July and make a Wiksten Unfolding jacket. Come and be guided through all the stages of the ancient craft of wood carving. Under the guidance of our tutor Alistair, you’ll learn a wide variety of wood carving techniques to bring your own design to life, how to draw and transfer your design onto your oak board, how to use a variety of chisels and knives safely, before finishing and taking it home.

These courses are suitable for complete beginners, but if you’ve dabbled in carving before you can focus on building on your existing skills under expert tuition. The course will build your confidence and knowledge to buy and maintain your own tools to set yourself up to carve at home.

Four more marvellous Makershed toolboxes left our workshop last Monday. Congratulations to our Level 1 students Anu, Nige, Katrina and Connor on learning how to make a toolbox using traditional techniques and woodworking hand tools such as chisels, saws, marking gauges, squares, block, plough and smoothing planes. Great job guys.

If you’d like to sign up for our Beginners Woodwork course, we have spaces available for our MONDAY DAYTIME classes starting on the 20th of June for 4 consecutive weeks. Or there are spaces left to book on our Level 1 ‘2 WEEKENDS’ course from the 16th of July which runs on Saturday and Sunday over 2 consecutive weekends.

After her lovely experiments with banana prints, Nic designed these two little magpies early on in our Lino Printing for Beginners course and then worked them into a bigger print comprising two separate layers printed at the same time with gorgeous results.

If like Nic, you’ve always wanted to make your own unique prints, our Lino-Printing courses will teach you to make your own hand-made project and lino-block to take home and use again and again. Learn about the tools, materials and printing inks for lino-printing and rubber stamp making and how to safely use lino-cutting tools and engraving techniques.

It’s not too late to sign up now for our next LEVEL 1 course starting this Wednesday the 4th of May for 8 weeks OR there’s LEVEL 2 (open to all but best suited to anyone who has completed our Lino Printing for Beginners course or has some printmaking experience) on Monday the 9th of May. These evening classes are consecutive with breaks for academic half terms, class times 6.20pm - 8.45pm.
