themakershedbristol
C A B I N E T ! Our Beginners woodworking courses C A B I N E T !
Our Beginners woodworking courses are split into 2 Levels over which you’ll learn a variety of traditional joinery techniques. After making the toolbox in Level 1 you’ll progress to Level 2 and make a softwood cabinet. At the end of the course you will take home your finished cabinet and the skills & confidence to start designing & making your own woodwork projects.
⠀
Split into three modules, each taking approximately 18 teaching hours to complete. You start with module 2A – The Case - and learn about through housings and through wedged mortice & tenons. Then moving on to module 2B – The Drawer - you’ll learn to create dovetails, corner rebates and ploughed grooves. Finishing off with module 2C – The Door - where you’ll learn the strong haunched stopped mortice & tenon and ploughed groove joints.
⠀
When we reopen all of our classes will have a student:tutor ratio of 6:1. Most are mixed level and some are mixed discipline, which means you will likely be in a group of people all doing different projects. Tuition is given on an individual basis at each student’s bench to ensure a fully COVID-secure working and learning environment. Visit our website for more details.

T O O L B O X E S! As we’re not getting back int T O O L B O X E S!
As we’re not getting back into the workshop until at least March, we’re going to continue our look back through our photo archive and reminisce. All the COVID-19 sadness has almost made us forget the joyful days of having a class full of happy students with no masks and no social distancing required. Thus we shall indulge ourselves with enjoyable memories like this.
⠀
This one is from November 2019 when this lovely bunch finished their ‘2 weekends’ Woodwork for Beginners course. They had a great time learning how to to mark out a joint, saw straight and square, chisel a rebate and use a variety of planes including block, plough and smoothing types.
⠀
We’re looking forward to adding loads more Makershed toolboxes to the world again in the future and we can’t wait to welcome ALL of our students back on the other side of Lockdown 3.0. In the meantime for all enquires regarding classes and rescheduling course dates please email us via hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk and we will reply as soon as possible.

P L A N E S ! Our tutor Jenny is keeping busy duri P L A N E S !
Our tutor Jenny is keeping busy during lockdown 3.0 by making some oak shelving from reclaimed floor boards. To prepare the timber she’s using a Quangsheng No. 62 low angle jack plane for the squaring the end grain, an Axminster Rider standard angle block plane for bevelling the edges, a Stanley Bailey smoothing plane for the long grain on the surfaces and a card scraper for tackling the knotty bits.
⠀
We absolutely love that there is a tool for every kind of woodworking job you can think of, so if you’d like to learn how to plane timber flat and square using planes like these, and be guided through using many other different types of traditional woodworking hand tools, then you can sign up for our beginners woodworking courses.
⠀
Our workshop doors might be closed, but waiting lists for all courses are still open so visit our website to have a look at what’s on offer and email us at hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk to register your interest.

G A U G E S ! In their first class, all of our new G A U G E S !
In their first class, all of our new beginners woodworking students are introduced to a basic set of traditional hand tools. Many will have cut wood with a hand saw before, seen a try square and have good suspicions at what a wooden mallet does. One tool though that triggers the most confused faces when you hold it up, is a marking or mortice gauge.
⠀
During the course our students quickly learn that using one makes their whole lives a lot easier. No it can’t end a pandemic lockdown, install a computer update or bake a cake for them, but it can, once set, make repeating exact measurements over and over again as easy as pie. If when we’re all allowed back out and into the workshop again and you'd like to learn how to use a marking gauge and many other types of traditional hand tools, you can sign up for our beginners woodworking course.
⠀
We will be operating waiting lists for places in woodwork classes so just email hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk to be added to one or more lists. We will contact you when you get to the top of a list to offer you a start date, when you accept a start date, you can book in and pay through our website.

L O C K D O W N ! So here we go again, another nat L O C K D O W N !
So here we go again, another national lockdown and sadly looking at the latest Government advice, it looks like we will now stay closed until at least March. We’ll obviously be revising our course timetable and will let everyone that is currently on or has booked a course know as soon as possible what this means for them.
⠀
As ever we are indebted to our students for their support and we’re gutted we won’t be seeing them anytime soon but we wish everyone well and look forward to welcoming you all back in the Spring. This situation is tough for a lot of people but we are not going to get downhearted, we are ready for what ever 2021 brings us.
⠀
We will aim to bring you smiles to your faces as we continue our look back through our photo archive and perhaps once in a while something a little different from our team as they spend lockdowns at home…. to start, here’s a photo of our tutor Ali’s dog enjoying a winter sunrise. Whatever you do to fill your time we hope you can get some time outdoors to be in nature and enjoy its beauty.

B Y E 2 0 2 0 ! During the long lockdowns and test B Y E 2 0 2 0 !
During the long lockdowns and testing tier restrictions this year we’ve been sent loads of messages and pictures from students letting us know what they have been doing to stay busy and creative. We’ve loved them all and have shared as many as possible on our social media feed, don’t worry if we haven’t shared yours yet, they are all ready and waiting!
⠀
We’ve also been looking back through our photo archive and have been reminiscing about previous students and their work. It seems fitting then to end the year by going right back to the start. This was one of our first ever Makershed woodwork students checking for flat & level end grain back in 2017. We’ve lost count of the number of toolboxes that have left our workshop since then!?
⠀
We’ve been very lucky to have had such great students who have helped us grow into a strong and stable business. We look forward to opening again in 2021, seeing some familiar faces and meeting lots of new students, in the meantime, please everyone - stay safe tonight, keep smiling and best wishes to all of you as we leave this strangest of years behind us.

W O O D W O R K ! We’re keeping all of our finge W O O D W O R K !
We’re keeping all of our fingers and toes crossed (if like me you can do that) for a fantastic 2021. We can’t wait to get back to the workshop and teach more beginners woodwork students (like the lovely James here) how to make a toolbox using chisels, planes, saws, gauges, squares and many other traditional woodworking tools and techniques.
⠀
As soon as we re-open James will be coming back to continue on our Woodwork for Beginners - Level 2 course, where he’s making a softwood cabinet and learning about housing, mortice and tenon, dovetail joints and dowels as well as how to assemble glue and cramp his cabinet together.
⠀
We will be operating waiting lists for places in Level 2 classes so just email hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk to be added to one or more waiting lists. We will contact you when you get to the top of a list to offer you a start date, when you accept a start date, you can book in and pay through our website. D - I - Y ? We’ve had a few messages over recent D - I - Y ?
We’ve had a few messages over recent months asking if we’ve any plans to start our popular DIY for Beginners courses in 2021. Sadly, the short answer is no. Back in August we halved our student capacity in the workshop to make sure everyone would be able to maintain a 2m physical distance between each other at all times and be COVID-Secure.
⠀
This meant that the wood, concrete, brick and plasterboard DIY walls (where students learnt how to put up coat hooks, doorstops and wooden shelves straight and level by learning how to choose the right drill bits, wall plugs, screws and brackets) had to come down. We then had enough room to divide into 6 separate work areas with a ‘safe space’ for working that is 2m from other work areas and 2m from communal walkways.
⠀
And that’s how the workshop stands today ready with each work area having its own set of tools and equipment so that sharing is minimised as much as possible along with cleaning and sanitising equipment for each student to use during each class. Should social distancing restrictions be eased or lifted during the latter part 2021 we shall of course review our course plans and may be we’ll get new walls built and DIY back on the schedule.

W A I T I N G . . . Yes, we’ve been having a sno W A I T I N G . . .
Yes, we’ve been having a snooze over the last few days and recharging the batteries! We do hope everyone has had a lovely, restful, nourishing and heartening weekend and that despite the current situation and restrictions you all had a good Christmas and made the most of the festive holiday.
⠀
We now find ourselves in that weird time in between Christmas and New Year when no one really knows what to do (apart from eat leftovers and watch films) before they go back to work. This year though we’re still not sure if we’re going back to the workshop!? Like a lot of businesses in the region we are waiting for confirmation on the 1st of January to see what tier Bristol will be in and we’ll review our plans then.
⠀
We’re of course hoping for good news and are getting ready for 2021. We will (as soon as we know) contact everyone that is currently on or has booked a course with us to let you know start dates and times. While we wait, stay healthy, stay warm and stay creative!
⠀
Whoops and I nearly forgot to tell you who’s in the picture? It’s George, Ash & Matt from back in August 2019, and yes they did all come back to make haunched mortice and tenon doors for their cabinets!

D E L I G H T ! Sending out a huge thank you to ou D E L I G H T !
Sending out a huge thank you to our student Martin who has sent us this picture of his Upholstered Furniture for Beginners – Level 2 - Armchair project at home along with these kind words...
⠀
‘Making my armchair at Makershed with Jenny and the team was a delight. The project is varied and interesting, the techniques are well-explained and the final product is excellent. I have to mention especially their COVID precautions which were rigorous, well thought-through, clearly explained and easy to follow without harming the class experience. The chair now has pride of place in our living room; it's comfortable, stylish and I'll treasure it for many years. This is the second course I've done with Makershed and both have been well worth the money and I'd wholeheartedly recommend them.’

S M I L E S ! Normally masks hide student smiles b S M I L E S !
Normally masks hide student smiles but we can tell from the look in those eyes that she’s beaming underneath there! This was just before LD2.0 and Alice had just finished Module B of our Woodworking for Beginners Level 2 course. She learnt how to mark out, cut, chisel and make a dovetail drawer to fit her cabinet.
⠀
She did a tremendous job over the 8 weeks of evening classes and she’s now moved on to Module C to make a haunched tenon shaker style door under the guidance of our tutor Ali to finish it off. If you’d like to join our Woodworking for Beginners courses when we reopen in 2021, just visit our website for more information.
⠀
If you’ve completed Level 1 or you are a Level 2 student looking to book your next module we are now operating waiting lists for ‘weekday’ evening and daytime courses and don’t forget our popular ‘2 weekends’ daytime course too. O N E Y E A R ! While we’ve been closed we’ve O N E Y E A R !
While we’ve been closed we’ve been looking back through our massive photo archive and this one is from exactly a year ago today. All happy faces with no masks, no social distancing and one absolutely fabulous Christmas jumper. Oh to be back then when we were looking forward to normal (whatever that is) Christmas and had dreams for 2020 being spectacular. Hmmm….
⠀
In making their Level 1 Toolboxes, this lovely lot learnt how to to mark out a joint, saw straight and square, chisel a rebate and use a variety of planes including block, plough and smoothing types effectively. When we do get back into the workshop in the New Year, just like before Lockdown 2.0 we’ll have a limited number of students (to allow for physical distancing) in our covid-19 secure workshop environment.
⠀
You can take part in our Woodwork for Beginners Level 1 courses on Wednesday/Thursday/Friday Evenings (8 weeks) or Thursday/Friday Daytimes (4 weeks) or on Saturdays & Sundays when we run the course over 2 consecutive weekends. In 2021 we will operate our waiting lists for places in these classes. Please email hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk to be added to one or more lists for the New Year.

⠀
He’ll teach you what to look for when purchasing old and new woodworking tools, the types of tools and what you might need to start woodworking. You’ll learn about types of sharpening stone and abrasives, how to sharpen chisels, planes, scrapers and saws. He’ll tell you about the types of steel used in tools and how this might affect how you sharpen them, how to create a turned edge.

S T O R A G E ! Tis the week before Christmas and S T O R A G E !
Tis the week before Christmas and there’s plenty of room to hide your gifts from Santa in there! Massive well done to Martha for making such fabulous footstool on our ‘Upholstered Furniture for Beginners - Level 1’ course back in September. In creating ‘The Storage Footstool’ she learnt the basic techniques of modern woodwork and upholstery, including beautiful looking deep buttoning for the lift-up lid and how to make the wooden frame from sustainably sourced European steamed beech.
⠀
In 2021 Tuesday evening classes 6.20pm -8.35pm and Friday daytime classes 10.00am – 3.00pm at The Makershed will mean were running Upholstered Furniture & Eco Upholstery classes. Further information is on our website but here’s a brief run down of what we have to offer.
⠀
ECO UPHOLSTERY FOR BEGINNERS.
In LEVEL 1 - The STOOL, students can learn the basics of traditional upholstery techniques by upholstering a pine stool, before moving to LEVEL 2 - THE CHAIR and upholstering a dining style chair using a mix of traditional and modern upholstery techniques. In LEVEL 3 students CHOOSE A PROJECT and we guide them through the process of planning, stripping, repair and re-upholstery.
⠀
UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE FOR BEGINNERS.
In LEVEL 1 - The STORAGE FOOTSTOOL - students make a solid hardwood stool frame using hand tools and upholster a lift-up deep-buttoned lid. In LEVEL 2 - THE ARMCHAIR students make a solid hardwood armchair frame using hand tools and then upholster the chair back and deep drop-in seat. In LEVEL 3 students CHOOSE A PROJECT and plan and make a piece of upholstered furniture under tutor guidance. We guide them through the process of planning frame construction and upholstery, making drawings, sourcing timber and materials and then making the project in the workshop.

Awesome. Who doesn’t love a pair of dungarees. Anyway, they belong to Abi, also the owner of that beautiful dinning chair with a newly reupholstered drop in seat. During our Eco Upholstery Level 3 – Re-upholstery Projects course, you choose your project and we guide you through the process of planning, stripping, repair and re-upholstery using recycled and environmentally friendly materials.
⠀
Re-upholstery projects vary a lot in the time in takes to complete them. Having completed the level 1 and 2 courses with us, you will be aware that upholstery by hand requires time and patience and the number of classes you require will depend on your project and work speed.

W O O D W O R K ! Our regular followers will know W O O D W O R K !
Our regular followers will know we do have a rather large penchant for a finished toolbox photo, and so, here’s our lovely Level 1 woodwork student Gareth who finished his toolbox just before Lockdown 2.0 this year. He did a fabulous job in learning how to use chisels, planes, saws, gauges and squares in making his toolbox during our evening classes.
⠀
He’s coming back to start our Woodwork for Beginners - Level 2 course, where he’ll make a softwood cabinet and learn about housing, mortice and tenon, dovetail joints and dowels as well as how to assemble glue and cramp his cabinet together. We can’t wait to welcome Gareth and all our students new and old back to the workshop when we open again in the New Year!
⠀
Not only do we take great pride in teaching our Woodworking for Beginners students the skills and techniques of traditional hand joinery to make their toolboxes, we love getting to know them all too. We’re really missing the conversations and all the jolly banter during the classes so can we just skip to January now please?!

One message we had through was a review of our Sharpening & Tool Maintenance course, it’s really lovely to know that all of the hard work we put into both our covid measures and course structure are appreciated and enjoyed so much by our students. Fingers crossed Santa will bring Chris some new chisels!

All Makershed gift vouchers will now expire 18 months from their purchase date, if you currently have a voucher to use, don’t worry we will extend that expiry date for a further 6 months and even longer if necessary. You can rest assured the discount codes will still apply when booking courses through our website long into the future.

W O O D W O R K ! Bristol enters Tier 3 restrictio W O O D W O R K !
Bristol enters Tier 3 restrictions today which means our workshop stays closed until the New Year, in the meantime we will be looking back through our massive photo archives to find some beauties to share with you all. Today we have the lovely Simon who completed his Level 2 cabinet way back in July 2018.
⠀
As many of you know our beginners woodworking courses are split into Levels 1 & 2 over which students learn a variety of traditional joinery techniques. In Level 2 they make a softwood cabinet and learn not only about housings but mortice and tenon, dovetails, using dowels as well as how to assemble, glue and cramp projects together.
⠀
We operate waiting lists for places in all of these classes. Please email hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk to be added to one or more lists for the New Year. We will contact you when you get to the top of a list to offer you a start date and tell you how to pay for your course plus materials. Please check our website for further information.

P A L L E T W O O D ! Hello! We start this week lo P A L L E T W O O D !
Hello! We start this week looking back at the lovely Grace who grabbed a last minute cancellation space and came to our Pallet Wood Workshop in October, in just one weekend she created a design, drew plans, made cutting lists and learnt how to use hand tools to build her fantastic shelving project using traditional joinery techniques.
⠀
Our March 2021 Pallet Wood Weekend Workshop run by our fabulous tutor Luke is fully booked BUT there are still TWO places available for Sat 6th & Sun 7th of February. Visit our website for details and to book your space. Please email hello@themakershedbristol.co.uk if you would like to be added to a waiting list for a cancellation space for the March Workshop as they do occasionally pop up.
⠀
As ever we are keeping all of our fingers and toes crossed that we will be open and firing on all cylinders next year but in the event we are not able to run any courses due to COVID-19 related restrictions we will always aim to reschedule your booking for another date or offer you a refund.

The Makershed will remain closed until further notice.

Sadly looking at the latest Government advice, it looks like we will now stay closed until at least March. We’ll obviously be revising our course timetable and will let everyone that is currently on or has booked a course know as soon as possible what this means for them.

Waiting lists for all courses are still open so have a look at what’s on offer and email us to register your interest for our re-opening. As ever we are indebted to our students for their support and we’re gutted we won’t be seeing them anytime soon but we wish everyone well and look forward to welcoming you all back in the Spring.
